About EmergySystems

EmergySystems is devoted to the development, application, and continuing exploration of emergy and systems thinking. It brings together historical materials, lectures, research, and other resources developed over many years, while also providing a place for new writing through Reflections and Observations.

Much of the material on this site grew out of work associated with the Center for Environmental Policy at the University of Florida and with the broader international community that developed around the work of H. T. Odum. EmergySystems continues that work independently, preserving important materials while providing a place to explore new ideas and questions about the organization and dynamics of human and natural systems.

About Mark T. Brown

I am Professor Emeritus of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida, where much of my career has been devoted to systems ecology, emergy analysis, and the study of coupled human and natural systems. I worked closely with H. T. Odum and subsequently with colleagues and students around the world in developing and applying emergy methods.

EmergySystems is my attempt to bring some of that work together in one place—not simply as an archive, but as a continuing exploration of the ideas that grew from it.
